The Hong Kong Remapping Project is a set of city exploration tool kits that encourages and facilitates the redefinition of Hong Kong city by the locals. Users are guided with provided themes that introduce alternative perspectives to local’s existing knowledge and typical impressions toward the different districts.
Along the journey of exploration, users can make marks and records of their discoveries and the experience. Through this, they would be able to enrich each district’s definitions and impressions based on their journeys individually —
their own findings from exploration journey, or collectively —
based on the sharing and exchange of findings from exploration journeys that are conducted in groups.
The design includes map holders, theme cards, district maps and mark-making booklets. The map holders are colour-coded according to the districts of Hong Kong. The theme cards introduce the districts from alternative perspectives, for instance, while Tsim Sha Tsui is known to be a tourist spot for shopping and dining, users are guided to look for small alleys instead of the malls and restaurants.
The district maps allow users to record the locations of their exploration journey, and the mark-making booklets allow them to record observation of the little things that interest them. The design aims to guide users, to be map creators instead of passive users, giving them the power to redefine and enrich the city’s impressions according to their own experience or perspectives.
